How to Secure Your Fortnite Account

Fortnite is one of the most popular games ever created, and it enjoys an insane amount of success. However, being in the spotlight for so long has also brought its fair share of issues, especially in the form of account thefts, compromises and fraud.

Now, a common misconception about suffering a breach, such as getting your Fortnite account hacked into, is “you definitely shared it or clicked on some weird links or had a password that’s also answered on your Facebook account”. Not true. Well, not completely true at least, as you can definitely suffer a breach if you do any of the above. However, the types of Fortnite account hacks we’re talking about are pertaining to mass thefts rather than individual targets (such as when your “friend” is trying to steal your account).

Regardless, our tips on how to secure your Fortnite account will apply to both cases, even if you’re the target of someone or part of a mass list of accounts that’s been stolen from a forum or something.

Why do you Need to Secure Your Fortnite Account?

Before we proceed with the tips, let’s first address this question, as some players believe that since it’s a free-to-play game, there’s no point in anyone hacking it. Not true.

Not only does your Fortnite account have a lot of things you earned or purchased for yourself, which in return can be very valuable for someone else who is simply looking to buy an account (from the person who steals it from you), but it also stores your payment information in it.

Considering that, chances are that before you know your Fortnite account has been hacked into, whoever did that, already purchased a ton of V-Bucks with it, to further max out the value they can get on the account when selling it to someone else.

Won’t the account get banned if it was sold, you’re asking? Most likely, but the hacker doesn’t care, as ultimately he hasn’t earned any of that himself, and just stole it from you, and sold it to someone else, so it’s a win-win situation for him, and a lose-lose one for both you and whoever buys it from him.

Now that we’ve established that, let’s get on to how to secure your Fortnite account, so you don’t have to deal with these issues!

5 Steps to Secure Your Fortnite Account

Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Most important and easiest part is enabling your two-factor authentication, which you can do so by clicking here. And, if you’re already using the Google Authenticator mobile app for other unrelated accounts, you’ll be happy to know it also works to secure your Fortnite account as well!

Even better, if you enable your two-factor authentication, you’ll automatically earn a free emote!

Install an Antivirus

I hope the only reason for which you’ll be skipping this step is because you already have an antivirus up and running at all times, but if you don’t – get one, NOW!

Now, when it comes to antivirus software, there’s been a constant debate ever since I can recall, in terms of “which one is the best antivirus” and so forth. Although everybody has their own opinion, and they’re entitled to do so, we strongly recommend Bitdefender. Not only is it extremely affordable, but it has yet to disappoint me or anyone I know who is using it, and they bring A TON of features, security and optimization to the table as well, including Game Mode, to avoid lagging you while gaming, as well as Mobile Antivirus for your phone.

Keep an Unique Mail Just for Your Fortnite Account

This might be a bit harder to accomplish, but I guarantee it’s worth it. Having an e-mail address that you use only for your Fortnite account is one of the best ways to ensure its security.

If you’re asking how is this relevant, well, if you use a mail for your Fortnite account that you also use of online raffles, random forums, different social media and so forth, it will be much easier for hackers to get ahold of that mail. Again, it doesn’t have to be a targeted attack against you personally or anything, but there are a lot of mail crawlers nowadays, and on top of that, a lot of forums get hacked into, and their databases leaked, and along with that, your mail and password.

Avoid Sharing Your Fortnite Account or Playing From Public Places

There shouldn’t really be any reason to share your Fortnite account, as it’s a free-to-play game, so if your friend really wants to check it out, it will take him just as little time to sign up than it would take you to share your account with him. And more so, you’ll even be able to play together, instead of taking turns on one account.

As for playing Fortnite from public places, ideally you’d avoid doing this altogether, but if your friends are attending an internet cafe, LAN party or something like that, and you really want to join them as well, then change your password before and after going.

Chances are, some of those computers might be having viruses, trojans, keyloggers and so on, and you wouldn’t want them to get ahold of your password. So, before going, change your Fortnite account’s password to something you’ll be using just that day, and once you’re done, change it back to your old one – not from that computer, but from your mobile phone or once you get back home.

Don’t Fall for Free V-Bucks or Fake Mobile Apps

Although there are a lot of websites out there that promise you free V-Bucks if you complete some chores, they are fake. The only reason they’re there is to get ahold of your account info and log into your account to either max out your credit card purchases or sell your account before you even realize it.

Same things goes for some cheats, who are actually keyloggers, as well as mobile apps, which are designed to just compromise your account. Although this part will most likely be prevented from happening thanks to your antivirus, it’s just good to keep it in mind, as you never know how you might end up in the middle of it.

Now, let’s get to another part of this entire guide, which is, an unfortunate one, in the event where your Fortnite account has been hacked into.

My Fortnite Account has been Hacked into

In the unfortunate event where your Fortnite account has been compromised, well, stay calm, and let’s go over what you need to do!

First of all, make sure to immediately scan your computer thoroughly, to make sure that this hasn’t been a result of a trojan or keylogger.

Once that’s done, if your antivirus did manage to find a virus, once you have it removed and you’re safe, proceed to immediately changing your passwords to everything of great importance – mails, banking accounts, social media, other games and platforms and so forth, as you never know what else has been sent to the attacker.

Afterwards, contact Fortnite Support to explain your case, especially if your account has been also banned as a result of this breach, and wait until you hear back from them. In the meantime, just make sure to go over any other accounts, games and mails you might have forgotten about, and make sure they weren’t hacked into. Best of luck!
